I write this presently just over 30,000 words in my novel. If you've been following this blog (and major props if you have! Seriously, thank you!) you can kind of track my progress. It's pretty incredible to see how far I've come. First off, let me apologize. This blog post was supposed to come about a week ago but I came down with a cold or flu or something and was bed-ridden for the better part of a week save to go to work. However, I'm hoping that it'll have been worth the wait. As I'm about 21,000 words deep in my new novel, I can safely announce what it's about. I think examining what's within a story you write. and how the characters and plot are shaped can tell you a lot about yourself as a writer. Are you the type of person that tries to layer every single character, even the secondary ones? Do you think the focus should be on the protagonist and antagonist, and fleshing out the side characters detracts from them? What about planning—do you outline, or should you jump in and go for it?
